Random Drug Screening

Protection for Everyone

Many organisations in the UK are adopting a drug and alcohol policy in order to deter employees using or misusing drugs and alcohol whilst in the workplace.

Research has shown that by carrying out random screening has many benefits in the workplace. It is effective in keeping employees safer by minimising accidents and litigation claims. It also encourages health and well-being which has been linked to the reduction in absenteeism due to ill health.

Random drug screening is carried out to protect all your employees and even the general public. This builds consumer confidence when they know that your company has adopted a zero tolerance when it comes to drug and alcohol in the workplace.

Employers must consider some points when operating a random drug and alcohol screening policy. Make sure that the following recommendations are at least looked at.

  • A clearly outlined policy that requires all employees in your company to be drug and alcohol free.

  • Prior notice to employees that random screening will be happening before the date samples are taken.

  • Include information on the type of drug test and which drugs they will be screened for.

  • Employee contracts should include a section stating they consent to the random drug and alcohol screening programme.

  • The applicant must also sign consent to donating a sample before drug and alcohol testing starts.

  • Everyone should be included in the random drug and alcohol programme to avoid acts of discrimination.
